About the lab

The BMR Lab is at the forefront of nutritional research, focusing on innovative strategies to address undernutrition by leveraging the human gut microbiome. Our mission is to develop dietary interventions that improve health outcomes across diverse populations, from malnourished children to aging individuals facing frailty.

Central to our research is the use of microbiome-modifying diets (MMD) and nutritional supplementation—including prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics—to optimize the gut microbiome. These interventions modulate the immune system, enhance overall health, and unlock additional energy from the microbiome.

By investigating how specific nutrients interact with the gut microbiome, we aim to uncover new ways to strengthen immunity and promote resilience against malnutrition and related health conditions. Our work spans various life stages, addressing challenges such as early childhood malnutrition, maternal nutrition, and aging-related frailty.

In clincal research, our lab operates on a hub-and-spoke model, where the hub represents the gut microbiome and the spokes extend to various clinical departments, such as the lungs, brain, reproductive system, skeletal system, and others [eg. Gut-Lung axis, Gut-Brain axis etc.], illustrating the interconnected impact of the microbiome on diverse physiological systems.

At the BMR Lab, we are committed to translating cutting-edge microbiome science into practical solutions that tackle critical clinical and nutritional challenges, empowering healthier lives in India and beyond.
